FAQ - Heel Pain

Why does my heel hurt in the morning?

Heel pain that feels particularly painful first thing in the morning may be plantar fasciitis. This condition involves a swelling, thickening, and tightening of the plantar fascia band that attaches to the heel bone. Using the affected limb stretches out the tightened band, but if you are off the foot long enough—for example, while you sleep—the tissue tightens and swells again. Then, when you try to stand first thing in the morning, you forcibly and painfully stretch out the ligament. You may even develop micro-tears in the tissue. This causes the intense pain that can occur first thing in the morning.

Plantar fasciitis tends to only worsen with time, so you’ll need to have your lower limbs treated to relieve your discomfort. Are there stretches that can help my heel pain?

Yes, a number of stretches can help relieve your heel pain, particularly if it’s caused by plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis. Stretches loosen tightened tissues so they’re more relaxed and able to accommodate you when you stand and walk.

Try the wall stretch first. To do this, stand facing a wall with your palms flat against it. One foot should be several inches behind the other. Bend your front knee and lunge forward while keeping the back knee straight and your heels on the floor. Bending both knees as you do this is called the ankle stretch, and it affects different connective tissues.

The towel and plantar stretches are particularly beneficial for a tightened plantar fascia. They flex the foot and pull the toes backward toward the shins. Massaging the sole of your foot with a frozen water bottle may offer quick relief for your pain as well. Stretching alone won’t help your heels recover, of course.
