FAQ - Footwear

What is the difference between custom and over-the-counter orthotics?

Not all orthotics are made the same. Over-the-counter inserts are pre-fabricated to fit a variety of foot types, based on average foot sizes. You can pick them up at any store. These inserts can be helpful for cushioning your lower limbs and supporting your arches. However, they are limited in what they can do: they cannot correct biomechanical issues or manage chronic disabilities.

Custom orthotics are special inserts that are molded to your feet and crafted to fit your unique needs. They have to be prescribed by a doctor, who determines how they will best help your feet, and then has them made according to your individual needs. These special insoles can correct biomechanical issues and manage chronic foot or ankle problems.

While over-the-counter insoles may be enough to help some people’s feet, many others would benefit more from custom orthotics designed for their needs. If you’re struggling with painful feet or need orthotic replacements, let Dr. Paul C. LaFata at West Lawn Podiatry Associates help you walk away with supportive shoe inserts.
